In my recent trip to Italy, I thought about shooting multiple film simulations simultaneously so I can showcase multiple at one time, and compare the differences. Spent a couple of days there trying out film simulations, so expect a couple more blog posts in the following weeks showcasing a total of 12 film simulations.

I simply set 3 film recipes for each day and I quickly snapped a shot with each in each situation, for a better example of the differences between various film recipes. I think this is a great method if you are unsure which film recipe to use, and you can simply switch between them in a matter of seconds.

If you want to learn how to easily switch between recipes using the Memory Recall Mode, here is a short tutorial on the basic workflow when using Sony film simulations

Main Characteristics of Each Recipe

Phoenix Harman 200

I wanted something warm and punchy, something with a unique character, and there is nothing, but I mean really nothing like the Phoenix Harman. High contrast, deep and warm colors. It's my new favorite film simulations and I think it will stay in my top # 10 film simulations for a long time. It's simply an amazing film simulation which might not be able to be reproduced in any other camera.

Kodachrome Gold edition

Replicating the look of Kodachrome's in the 50s, this film simulation had has golden skin tones and deep velvety blues, focusing on a complementary blue-amber color harmony. Since these photos were taken I made the recipe slightly warmer to focus more on the golden skin tones. You can check a full article here.

Kodak Gold V1

Simply magical, warm skin tones accompanied by nostalgic blues. Probably the community's number one most beloved film simulation, this is a film simulation which works great in any situations which makes it a great option for starters.

Looking at the images side by side, each simulation brings its unique personality to the table. Across all the sets, the differences in tone, contrast, and mood stand out clearly.

Hopefully the samples helped you spot the differences between them. I think these kinds of comparisons are a great example of how individual recipes differentiates from one another. Let us know if you like these type of comparisons, as I am planning on making a couple more of them.
