Kodak gold 200 unexpected results

Yeah, I think it's very normal. At first, I also thought everybody is getting the same look and colors when using the same film stock. But when I started comparing images from around the world I realized people are getting very different results and I started reading more about it.

I dont think Im understading. Just to be sure Im understanding correctly: I applied the kodak gold recipe of the "Sony Film Simulation Recipes V" pdf onto a picture profile, and then took pics (raw+jpg) with that (and the kelving and color configs applied too). The example preset I used in the previous post to show what I expected was a different preset from the internet that I applied as an example onto the jpg from the camera

I thought you were using my Lightroom presets, so now it makes sense why the huge difference between the two.

A couple of things:

If you want to see what kind of colors you should be getting with each film simulation, you should check the image references from the PDF bundle.

This image is an accurate depiction of what the Kodak Gold will look like if used on the same cameras as I am, meaning the a6700 at the moment. You can also check my Blog posts for references. These are the colors you should be expecting from Kodak Gold.

So why the difference between presets?

Film is a volatile medium and the results vary depending on many factors like heat, exposure to light, ways of developing, shelf life etc. So when comparing results people are getting from the same film, you will notice color can be totally different, so preset will differ as well. When using Kodak Gold, some people are getting Blue skies, other are getting Teal shifted skies. Same thing what is happening here. The preset you have used is based on a different result people are getting when using Kodak Gold. You have a preset which is trying to replicate a look based on a Teal and Amber color science. Mine is based on an Amber - Blue-Violet color science.

When I create these film recipes, I search and take as many references into account to accurately replicate any given film stock. It's true that Kodak Gold sometimes comes out as the second reference picture, but more often than not, I noticed Kodak Gold is actually amber with blue-violet skies. So I adjusted my film recipe to that.

Anyhow, I received multiple requests to create a recipe for the second version as well, so I did, and it will be added to the PDF in the next update.

That being said, your results look much colder than what I am getting on my sony a6700, which might be a clue to your camera color tendency.

This is what I am getting from my camera:

You can notice how much warmer this is.

Even walls that should be gray, are shifted towards Orange. And in your image, everything is rather cold. So maybe the a6300 sensor is cooler in white balance than the a6700, and that's normal.

Camera manufacturers keep updating their color science which each new model, so from 2016 when the a6300 was released up to 2023 there are quite some years difference. But no worries, it's pretty easy to fix.

From the image you have attached, you can adapt the film recipe to your camera by increasing the Kelvin from 8000K to 8500, or even 9000 Kelvin if it's still too cold. If the image comes out too magenta, push the color filter to B3 or B3-G1.

That should fix it.
