Hello! First post and only a few days using both the PDF presets in camera and the LR presets.
I have just read that the LR Profiles are meant to be used with the camera profile ALSO configured, which is a bit of a downer. If I want the look on camera, I set the camera and shoot JPG. If I want to shoot RAW, on the other hand, I shoot RAW and expected the profiles to have similar impact on the image without having to load the profile in the camera as well. Could there be a profile that works from the camera "default" RAW (assuming certain settings is OK, like Nuetral or Standard porfile, for example)? Also, I have a request: could B&W and Color profiles be on separate subfolders? Either I want to work B&W or I want to work in color. I don't see a flow where I'm trying to see if a particular image is better with a B&W profile or a color one. Maybe others work differently? At any rate, just starting, wanted to drop a few questions or suggestions to make these profiles more usable on standard flows instead of all the inputing of data when going RAW. Thanks! Rafa.
Hei there Rafael, thanks for joining in, and welcome!
Yeah, I totally agree it's a bit of a downer, which will be fixed in the new update.
The problem with this version of the presets, it doesn't contain the White Balance Settings of the film recipes (daylight), like in the previous version did. So now when you apply the presets on a different film simulation, it won't adapt the white balance to the other film simulation, but rather use the white balance you've used in camera. Even tho it includes the HSL adjustments to match with the original film simulation, the White Balance plays a huge part as a base in shifting colors, because each film simulation has a different temperature and color filter setting.
So that's why at the moment, if you use a preset that is not matching the one used in camera, the results won't come as accurate as they are supposed to. Because it's using the same white balance from your camera.
This is a mistake on my part. I thought, since people keep adjusting these film recipes in camera (changing the kelvin and color filter as the light changes or adjusting these recipes to your own camera and liking), maybe I should remove the white balance setting from the presets, so when you apply the preset, it uses the in camera white balance of your choice, coming closer to how the jpeg would look in camera.
Now it's obvious to me, this came with a big downside, that now people are limited to using the matching preset for the film simulation they have shot in. So I will fix this in the following update.
The new version will include the Film recipe White balance, so you can apply any film preset, even if you haven't shot the matching film simulation. This will give you the Daylight equivalent. If you want the custom in camera temperature chosen by you, all you have to do is reset to original White balance. This will render much closer results and offer versatility, not needing to shoot the matching film simulation with the preset. Again, results will be similar but not 100% the same, and that is because of the Color Mode you have chosen in camera, which affects the RAW file as shown in this post https://www.veresdenialex.com/sony-film-simulations-forum/main/comment/72a6c93a-4a67-4e04-a408-aaf49e615a94?postId=644b3149fb0ba80012d6d0ff
In the above post I was using the previous version of the presets which included the White Balance Settings. It's definitely coming closer, but still some colors (check the blues in the example) are coming slightly more teal compared to the original (Classic Cinema), and that is because the color mode you have shot in, will affect the colors on the RAW file, or how your editing software will interpret color.
This is out of my hand, if the color mode of the recipe is different from the color mode the preset is trying to match, there is no way of creating a preset that will perfectly match your colors to the jpeg, because each color mode has a different color mapping. Hope this can be understood.
So when using the presets unmatched, you need to understand the results will be similar, but with slight differences.
I will also organize the BnW and Color presets into different folders as you requested, for an easier workflow.
Updates are sent though email, so if you want updates on film simulations, make sure to subscribe with an active email and check my newsletter. I don't send them very often, but when I do, it contains valuable information.
Thank you for your suggestions, feedback is always welcome!
