Hey there, I picked up the simulations and the Kodachrome power grade and I just had a few questions about workflow.
I shoot on two cameras—a Sony FX30 and a DJI Osmo Action 5, so I was wondering what the best way to color match them is—should I forego the simulation, shoot log on both and power grade? Shoot log on the DJI, simulation on the Sony and then turn off the film color node for the Sony’s footage in the grade? Something else?
And then once we’re into grading, you mention a node sheet, but that wasn’t included in the Kodachrome power grade (as far as I can see), and you have a bunch of different contrast looks in a folder on your power grade how-to, but there aren’t any I can find on Kodachrome. Is there a specific contrast to Kodachrome that I’m just supposed to micro-adjust or is that missing (or did I just miss it)?
Having a bunch of fun playing around in DaVinci where I didn’t use to, I appreciate all the work you’ve done to set this up. Even without any expertise, footage is coming out far more pleasing in far less time, so I’m excited to learn!
Awesome, this is so helpful. Thank you!
Shoot log on both, and use the power grade, it's easier to match this way. When working with power grades, it’s best to stick with log or a natural/neutral film simulation. Film simulations are designed for ready-to-use colors and often have a strong character right out of the gate. When combined with a power grade, the result can sometimes be overly intense, so you’ll usually need to adjust contrast and color to tone things down.
The video you watched is outdated and references a different power grade that’s no longer available. It was more of a "build-your-own-power-grade" concept, but I removed it due to low interest. The current Kodachrome power grades are ready to use out of the box—just apply them to your footage and tweak each node as needed to match your preferences.
